Best anamorphic lenses for Sony FX3 / A7 IV
Both are full-frame Sony E-mount bodies, so most affordable anamorphics fit natively. The real question is coverage and the FX3's crop-mode limits.
Short list
- Cheapest full-frame 1.6x: Sirui Venus 50mm T2.9 at $299. The rest of the Venus line (35/75/100/150mm 1.6x, 135mm 1.8x) is $499 each. See Saturn vs Venus.
- Lightest full-frame set: Sirui Saturn 35/50/75mm, $499 each, 390–465 g (Sirui, E-mount). Price history: Saturn 35mm tracker.
- Subtle 1.33x on full frame: Blazar Beetle 32/45/65mm T3.2 at $599 each, or the faster Blazar Mantis line at $999.
- Autofocus: Blazar Talon 1.5x AF (full frame, Sony E only, from $899). Sony's own FX3 notes say de-squeeze display forces manual focus, so AF and the preview don't mix in-camera.
- Super 35 / APS-C on a budget: the Sirui 1.33x APS-C primes at $199 need the camera's S35 crop; on the FX3 that means HD (see below).
What the camera does for anamorphic
- FX3: Sony lists a De-Squeeze Display (from firmware 3.00) with 1.3x and 2.0x settings; firmware 7.00 adds 1.5x and 1.6x (the 1.6x setting corrects by 1.65x, per Sony). While it is on, focus is locked to manual and SteadyShot is switched off. (Source: Sony FX3 Help Guide, De-Squeeze Display)
- FX3: APS-C/Super 35 shooting crops the angle of view by about 1.5x, but Sony notes it is locked to Off when recording 4K. So on the FX3, S35/APS-C-only anamorphics are only usable full-res in HD, or with vignetting. (Source: Sony FX3 Help Guide, APS-C S35 Shooting)
- A7 IV: we could not find a De-Squeeze Display in Sony’s A7 IV Help Guide, so plan on desqueezing in post or on an external monitor. (Unverified: check the current firmware notes.) (Source: Sony ILCE-7M4 Help Guide)

Native mount, smaller image circle
These lenses are built for Super 35 / APS-C (or smaller). On a full-frame body they need the APS-C/S35 crop mode, which on the FX3 is locked off in 4K according to Sony. The A7 IV handles crop recording differently; check Sony's A7 IV documentation for your resolution.

Adaptable from Canon EF / PL
E-mount's short flange distance means EF and PL lenses can be adapted with a passive adapter. Blazar warns that some EF versions (for example the Remus) have rear protrusion, so check compatibility.

|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| UHD 16:9 (3840×2160) (1.78:1) | 2.36:1 | 2.67:1 | 2.84:1 | 3.20:1 | 3.56:1 |
| DCI 4K 17:9 (4096×2160) (1.90:1) | 2.52:1 | 2.84:1 | 3.03:1 | 3.41:1 | 3.79:1 |
Recorded width/height × squeeze. Green cells land within ±0.08 of 2.39:1; anything wider gets cropped at the sides, anything narrower at the top and bottom. Try other numbers in the squeeze factor calculator.
Which squeeze for 16:9 recording?
Neither body records 3:2 open-gate video in our sources, so you are working from a 16:9 (or 17:9) frame. A 1.33x lens lands almost exactly on 2.39:1 with no cropping. 1.5x and 1.6x come out wider (2.67:1 and 2.84:1) and usually get cropped at the sides; 2x on 16:9 gives 3.56:1, which is why 2x lenses are normally paired with 4:3 or 6:5 sensor modes. See cheapest 2x lenses if you still want the classic 2x look.
